Guidelines for the Preventative Care of Birds
The doctors and staff at Sunnyvale Veterinary Clinic know that
your pets are important family members in your home, just as they are in our
homes. We want your pets to live as long and as healthy lives as our own pets.
In order to achieve this health goal, routine exams and test are a key part of
our preventative health program.
Although each pet has individual needs, the following
guidelines have been successful in keeping our pets healthier longer by
discovering diseases sooner, when they are easier to treat and cure.
The guidelines for all pet birds are as follows:
1. Annual physical exam
2. Annual fecal float and gram stain
3. Review of exercise, light exposure, air quality,
humidity, behavior, housing conditions, and nutritional analysis
In addition to the above, the guidelines for large birds
(Amazons, Cockatoos, Macaws, African Greys, Pionus, Eclectus Parrots and other
similar sized psittacine birds) are as follows:
1. Blood test for polyoma virus and PBFD (at purchase exam)
2. Annual complete blood panel
3. Annual choanal/cloacal culture and sensitivity test
4. Discuss vaccinations available with veterinarian
